This was going to be number one on my list. It probably should be. But one of the biggest reasons Dexter is a better on screen killer than any other comes down to one simple question: Is this world better off with Dexter Morgan in it? To put it another way, is the city of Miami safer with or without Dexter? The last season ended with Deb gunning down Maria LaGuerta after she discovered Dexters true identity. Deb chose to put down a dedicated police woman to save a certified psychopath, and I submit that as far as crime is concerned, she made the right decision. From a police standpoint, someone will rise up to take LaGuertas place on the force, and the ins and outs of the everyday office politics will continue. Warrants will be issued and criminals will be arrested and tried. It sounds cruel, but her death will not mean much in terms of how the justice system operates overall. With Dexter, there are certain things that fall between the cracks that only he can fix, and he is happy to do so. If you were to take Dexter out of the puzzle, would there be more or less crime?
