10 Reasons Doctor Who Is Better When You're An Adult

The Sarah Jane Adventures was an incredibly fun children’s show, full of fighting aliens and navigating family life. But the brilliantly dark Torchwood is a must for any adult Doctor Who fan – who doesn’t want to see Captain Jack Harkness in all his glory…?

While Torchwood had its awkward teenage phase as its writers transitioned from Doctor Who, it quickly matured to provide us with complex and sophisticated stories. Without the need to keep themes child-friendly, the Whoniverse became less clean-cut. Characters are not entirely good or bad, with some being unashamedly unlikeable at times.

As to be expected, the show is filled with adult themes, exploring a variety of diverse relationships and depicting more graphic violence. Whilst Doctor Who gave us a bittersweet ending at worst, Torchwood’s darkest episodes left us hopeless. In the heart-breaking season one episode Out of Time, a father thrown into the future visits his now-adult son, who is an old man suffering from dementia, making him lose his will to go on.

Torchwood never shies away from telling dark stories, making the show feel more like a reflection of our own universe than Doctor Who. Therefore, it is essential viewing for any adult fan.

Jess has just graduated from Winchester with a BA in writing. Her non-academic achievements include watching the fantasy drama Merlin five times and reading an ungodly amount of YA fiction. She also enjoys playing sandbox games, singing along poorly to Twenty One Pilots' lyrics and writing too much for her biography.
