10 Reasons Everyone In Star Trek Is An Idiot

8. Crew Surveillance

There€™s a season two Next Generation episode, €œQ Who€, which introduces the Borg and is largely excellent television. It does, however, point out a rather major flaw in the ship€™s security €“ Q is able to whisk Picard away to a shuttlecraft €“ at least he remembers they exist €“ so that they can have a natter without Q breaking his promise to leave the Enterprise alone. The first time anyone realises that the Captain is even missing is when he€™s late for a meeting, which is so wildly out of character for Picard even Troi realises that something€™s amiss. Four years on and they still haven€™t learned their lesson €“ in €œSchisms€, Riker and several other crewmembers are abducted by aliens on a nightly basis, apparently for days on end, and once again someone has to ask the computer where they are before they€™re missed. Given how often aliens seem to nick off with key personnel, any sane admiral would be making some serious changes to how security worked €“ like, for example, having the computer check every few seconds to make sure that the senior staff are aboard and breathing and raising the alarm if not. In fact, the ship doesn€™t even bother to track the crew €“ only their combadges, which gets used against Starfleet time and again when anyone who€™s being hunted just takes theirs off. It also means that the Enterprise can€™t accurately track civilians, visiting dignitaries, kids or Data€™s cat, and everyone€™s apparently okay with this. Mandatory RFID tags and continual surveillance of senior staff might sound draconian, but at least the crew will know the next time their Captain winds up face down in the fish tank after too much Chateau Picard.
