10 Reasons Game Of Thrones Is No Good For George R. R. Martin

6. Robb Stark Is No Longer His Father's Son

In A Song Of Ice And Fire, Robb Stark is a child forced to become a man following the execution of his father. The eldest, and the heir to Winterfell, he idolised Eddard Stark. Every action he takes in the books leading up to his eventual fate is in his father€™s name, in more ways than one. The greatest case in point is in his poorly chosen marriage. Robb was bedridden and recovering as a guest of the Westerling family when he heard that his foster brother Theon had killed his two younger brothers Bran and Rickon. Brokenhearted, he was comforted in his grief by young Jeyne Westerling (if you know what we mean, and we think you do). Once he snapped to, his pride wouldn€™t allow him to walk away from the young woman who he had dishonoured, and so he arranged to marry her. He€™s a fifteen-year-old still in mourning for his father, desperate to be like him. Yet he recognises here a situation similar to one his father had faced when his bastard brother and best friend Jon Snow was conceived. So he tried to make amends, for himself, and for his father and half-brother. And, like his father, his honour would see him outmaneuvered and savagely killed. That€™s A Song Of Ice And Fire. Mirroring and heartbreak, and running along the common theme of the first few books€ that the Starks cannot play the game of thrones. That the Starks cannot remain themselves and survive. In the television show, Robb€™s an adult, and a very stupid one, who falls in love with a hot nurse and abandons everything he€™s ever been taught by his father, his mother, his tutors and his generals. He marries a virtual stranger and destroys all of the plans he€™d worked so hard on. He just falls in love, screws up and dies for it. Do you see the difference?
