10 Reasons Murder House Is The Best Season Of American Horror Story
1. It Was Dark
From Larry Harvey being burned alive, to the bathtub murder of nurses, Murder House was not one for the squeamish. Happy times singing "The Name Game," or laughs at Miss Robichaux's Academy for Exceptional Young Ladies were a long way off, and the first series of American Horror Story was so dark, you might as well have turned the lights off.
While later seasons would move into more mythical horror with aliens and voodoo, Murder House was cemented in good old fashion murder (the clue was in the name). Having a largely deceased cast meant that we got to explore each and every one of their demises in gruesome fashion. There were no less than 26 ghosts inhabiting the murder house by the season's end, and each one had their own story to tell.
A young Kate Mara was struck with a shovel, Tate was gunned-down by a SWAT team, and Infantata was sewn back together. Murphy literally put the horror in Horror Story, and Murder House was a depressing outing. The likes of Coven and Hotel had a lot more of a comedic edge, whereas there was little to chuckle about in Season 1. That isn't to say that the rest of the seasons were light on the blood 'n' guts, but there was a raw quality to Murder House.
