10 Reasons The Great British Bake Off Is A Slice Of British Brilliance
5. The Bakes
Watching the Great British Bake Off is the perfect excuse to munch through cake, muffins, choux buns, meringues... the list of sweet treats we've consumed using the Bake Off as an excuse is quite frankly endless. Seriously though, these guys are supposedly amateur bakers and they're baking things I've never heard of at a higher standard than I ever have in my kitchen. Tempering chocolate is second nature, sugar work becomes child's play, and making multiple tiered bakes is suddenly a completely normal thing to do.
Contestants each bake 3 times per episode so choosing the best bakes from this year's show is tricky. Nadiya was consistently good, getting good feedback for her rose-pistachio and mocha-hazelnut cream horns and her peanut, salted caramel and chocolate tart. Also she made a 3-tiered cheesecake with a levitating cola can, and it was so good it's ridiculous.
Tamal struggled with timings throughout the entire show, and it didn't change in the final – his iced buns were described as 'marmalade butties' as they were lacking the critical crème patissierre. The bake that got the biggest response from the public was Paul's king of the jungle lion bread; he made an actual lion head out of bread, the head of a wild cat from BREAD.
