10 Reasons The Great British Bake Off Is A Slice Of British Brilliance
4. The Inevitable Disasters
Season 6 gave us the worst Great British Bake Off disaster to date. The first episode saw all 12 bakers asked to create their signature take on a classic black forest gateau; some were just plain weird (we're talking Stu's beetroot based gateau) but Dorret had the worst bake of the entire show. Her black forest gateau included a chocolate mousse layer that she had trouble firming up.
Off she popped to put it in the freezer with a plastic cuff to keep it in place. Her time ran out and when the 53 year old lifted the plastic cuff off her cake it became clear that the mousse hadn't set at all. We peeked from behind pillows to see the mousse leaked out, enveloping the rest of the cake and causing it to collapse.
Poor Dorret's sorry excuse for a black forest gateau ultimately spawned an unbelievable amount of 'soggy bottom' jokes, but she did manage to survive the week as Mary and Paul just couldn't forgive Stu's beetroot concoction. We didn't see another disaster on this scale for the rest of the show, and to be honest the lack of regular baking disasters was definitely missing from season 6.
