For all its faults, the show has still managed to remain one of the most popular shows on television, even with the fans and media nitpicking every little thing. That says a lot about the shows strengths and its ability to survive despite its weaknesses. But, it's important to acknowledge that no show remains on top forever, and The Walking Dead is simply not the next Simpsons - it has little chance of remaining relevant for decades or having a second strong creative era. What it does have is a shot to go out on top, if it wraps up in the next couple of years. Fans might still clamour for more Breaking Bad, but that show had zero fat: it was economically created with a strong exit strategy that wasn't abandoned simply because of increased audience engagement and success. And at the other end of the scale, of course, shows like Lost were over-extended chasing the buck, and suffered in legacy terms. A solid ending is all the show needs to cement its own legacy. Otherwise, it will just shamble forward, zombie-like, with no end in sight - until fans grow tired, tune out, and the show winds up cancelled, leaving the fanbase to wonder what it was all for, other than ratings.
