2. There's Only So Much Fans Can Take!
Television fans are not comic books fans. Yes, there is some cross-over, but for the most part, they don't have the attention span, and six or seven years is a long time to follow a show where there is no ending in sight - especially when it's a show that tends to kill off the best characters, as well as a whole bunch of innocent kids. Carol's daughter Sophia was one thing (and then we found out that she was in the barn all along), but Beth was something else. She was really starting to shine and fans were totally onboard with the character... so of course she was killed, in senseless fashion. That was made especially senseless since Beth was essentially a free character - there is no Beth Greene in the comics anyway - and she could have been used as an opportunity for diversion from comic storylines in a meaningful way. These kicks in the gut make for good dramatic television until the point that they become overwhelming - at which point, they begin to lose impact.
