Batman Beyond's greatness has a lot to do with its solid balance of the old and the new. Even though the series is in the future, remnants from the past still show up.

Classic villains like Mr. Freeze and the Joker make appearances within the series, both being brought back with enhancements in technology. It is also interesting to see the legacy they have left behind. The Clown Prince of crime has inspired a criminal gang known as the Jokers and Mr. Freeze’s actions are still hurting people many years later. Even Bane’s Venom has been turned into a street-level steroid used by High School athletes called “Slappers.”

Having Barbara Gordon taking over as Police Commissioner is a great way to keep that dynamic going. The retired Boy Wonder Tim Drake also makes an appearance although he is possessed by the Joker via technology. Even though the two are out of the game, they do get pulled back in by Terry and Bruce.

The JLU of the future makes an appearance which features mostly new members except one. An older Superman sporting a silver fox look with a black and white suit ends up going rogue, having to fight the caped crusader.
