When the cast for Season Two was announced way back at the tail end of 2014, it was Colin Farrell and Vince Vaughn who were grabbing the headlines.  Perhaps fans envisioned them as an odd-couple duo in the same way that Rust and Marty had been, but whatever the hopes, hype around these two left little room for any of the other leads.

In contrast to those early words, Rachel McAdams' as Detective Ani Bezzerides has been something of a phenomenon, in many ways transcending the otherwise negative response that this season has had. She has not only been lauded for her performance, but for her haircut, recently becoming something of a fashion icon.

McAdams' performance has indeed been remarkable: she is at once tough, independent and not for one moment has she relied on any of the male leads. Or, at least not in a way that has been detrimental to character development.

McAdams is arguably better known (like McConnaughey, Harrelson and Vaughn) for comedic roles in more light hearted fair such as Mean Girls and About Time. In that regard, her powerhouse performance in True Detective has been a real game changer for her and should see her in good stead to take on further dramatic roles in the future.

She even got the best line, "I just really like big d*cks... I want to have trouble handcuffing the thing."
