10 Reasons Why Season 2 Of True Detective Is Actually Awesome
1. Colin Farrell Was Absolutely Perfect As Detective Ray Velcoro
At first, it seemed that Colin Farrell's Ray Velcoro was going to be a Rust Cohle-lite; McConnaughey without the tiny mirror and the complete works of Neitzsche. But, once again, as the season went on, it became apparent just how great an actor Colin Farrell is, and how frankly awesome a character Velcoro was.
Ray's life was a struggle (he wouldn't be in True Detective if it wasn't, would he?): a struggle to do the right thing, to be a good man when he wasn't sure whether he was capable of being one. The scenes depicting him with his son, and the love and care he showed for him were always heartbreaking; his son always comically indifferent to Velcoro's passionate pleas.
Velcoro's fear of losing his family, and all of the problems that spiralled from that fear, were beautifully portrayed by an actor who is often underused or badly cast. Always likeable and always believable, his performance ranged from over-the-top drug acting to understated, man-at-the-end-of-his-tether, to a gun-wielding bad-ass-in-a-white-cowboy-hat; while his love and adoration for his son and the blossoming romance between him and Bezzerides offered the audience his most tender and intimate moments.
A lesser actor would have struggled to portray such a range of emotions while staying true to the essence of the character, yet Farrell did an astoundingly good job at portraying Velcoro's every facet.
