10 Red Dwarf Episodes You Absolutely Must See
1. Quarrantine
While Back to Reality is frequently touted as the best, a case can be made for this fellow Series V episode, if for no other reason than just how relatable it has become. After a close encounter with a deranged hologramatic scientist infected with a 'holo-virus' that causes insanity and the development of psychic powers, Rimmer forces the rest of the crew to enter quarantine (talk about a scenario that's become more relatable with age!).
It's hilarious to watch the boys come to blows after just a few days, as their character flaws and poor personal habits get on each other's nerves. Of course, the situation is only exacerbated by the poor excuse for entertainment and paltry rations provided by Rimmer.
The insanity reaches even greater heights though when they discover that Rimmer has succumb to the holo-virus, rendering him completely insane and homicidal. The big reveal of Rimmer sitting on the other side of the observation window, dressed in a gingham dress, bonet and army boots is one of the greatest moments in the show's history. And who can forget Mr. Flibble, Rimmer's penguin hand-puppet sidekick?
Honestly, Chris Barrie is nothing short of extraordinary in this episode, as he manages to spew out lines of absolute nonsense, while maintaining a straight face. It's the perfect blend of comedy and menace. There are simply far too many stand-out moments to list, which is why this episode deserves to be counted among the best that Red dwarf has to offer.
