10 Revived Doctor Who Episodes That Are Perfect For A Rainy Day
4. The Girl In The Fireplace
Back to 2006 now (are you keeping up?) for one of Series 2's most celebrated episodes which was also NuWho's first proper exploration into the timey-wimey tribulations of a relationship with the Doctor can be. The victim of circumstances in this scenario is Jeanne Antoinette Poisson - also known as Madame de Pompadour or just Reinette for short - who crossed paths with the titular Time Lord at various points throughout her life even though it was all happening in the short space of one day for him. That's time travel for you. The Girl in the Fireplace is, of course, one of Steven Moffat's most acclaimed Whoniversal contributions and it was arguably one of the stand out episodes of the Tenth Doctor's tenure, too. It has all the makings of a classic in terms of its story and structure as one of the rare instances (well, it was still rare at this point, at least) that the Doctor's lifestyle catches up with him with the Clockwork Droids serving as a painful reminder of just how damaging the consequences of being associated with him can be. Meanwhile, his companions Rose and Mickey are off on their own mini-adventure during which they learn more about their alien friend so it's generally a worthwhile and educational escapade for all concerned. Sophia Myles deserves special recognition for her guest portrayal of Madame de Pompadour and the episode in general is perfect for a rainy day because it's one that's standalone but still manages to break your heart with its depth and intimacy. You'd better get the tissues on stand by for this one, too.
