10 Revived TV Shows That Should've Stayed Cancelled
7. Red Dwarf
One of the more out-there, concept driven sitcoms to find success in Britain, Red Dwarf was a charmingly cheap sci fi comedy that produced eight strong seasons between 1988 and 1999. The hapless crew, comprising the last man on earth, a robot, a humanoid cat, and a hologram, enjoyed capers across the universe, before the show came to a fittingly weary end.
Rerun specialist network Dave gained the rights to Red Dwarf, and the repeats proved popular. It’s a cosy show, great nostalgia. Then, someone had the bright idea to bring it back.
The revived Red Dwarf has run sporadically since 2009, and each new iteration is increasingly depressing. The cast (who, with love, haven’t had much on since the show was cancelled) look ever more embarrassed to be sat in the same seats doing the same thing after all these years. Attempts to spice matters up with a little more cursing and sauciness have done nothing to improve the show.
Ratings were reasonable at first, but the fondness for the revamped series has steadily trickled away over 11 years. Put simply: we didn’t, and don’t, need any more Red Dwarf.
