10 Revived TV Shows That Should've Stayed Cancelled
5. Futurama
It’s not hard to see why fans so fervently fought for Futurama to remain on our screens after its 2003 death. It was messed about something fierce my Fox, bounced around the schedule, meaning fans couldn’t even find it so as to boost its ratings. It seemed doomed to become a cult affair, fizzling out quietly.
In its downtime it found favour on DVD and Comedy Central repeats, and there was much joy when the Double C picked up Matt Groening’s show for a rebooted series. Four straight-to-DVD movies followed, then another two seasons.
They were… fine! They were fine. There are some great moments in the revived ‘rama, but let’s face it: the Comedy Central era doesn’t come close to the first four seasons, which started strong and only got better as the show became funnier, wilder, deeper, and more emotional.
The creative team evidently wanted another bash at the ending, and it does come to a great finish, but the original ending was pretty great, too. Perhaps everything wasn’t wrapped up all neat, but it worked wonderfully for the show. It never sank to the depths of The Simpsons, but the returns were diminishing by the end.
