10 Roles That Showed Doctor Who Actors In A Completely Different Light
8. John Hurt Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull
After it was leaked that John Hurt was to play the Doctor, we all guessed that his incarnation would be gravelly-toned, wise, with a streak of darkness, and that he would probably die (or at least get badly hurt) at some point. That's the image we all have of Hurt, from Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy to Harry Potter, and every supporting role he's had in between. Indiana Jones And The Kingdom Of The Crystal Skull gives Hurt much the same basis; he's a very British archaeology professor, capable of epic speeches according to Indy. Unlike many of Hurt's roles though, he's presumed to be mad for most of the film; the titular skull hypnotises Hurt's character, Harold Oxley, leaving him dumbed down, and somewhat comically simple. Hurt's colossal screen presence and magisterial wisdom is abandoned in favour of a childlike, wide-eyed character who actually slows the gang down more than he helps them. Though it looks like a car crash on paper, Hurt plays the role fantastically. It's a rare glimpse into a lighter side of his persona not nearly showcased enough.
