10 Saddest Moments In BoJack Horseman

5. I See You

BoJack Horseman Free Churro
Netflix

Free Churro is a masterstroke of television. Aside from a brief opening flashback, the entire episode is a single monologue: BoJack speaking at his mother's funeral. Although the ending ultimately reveals that he's not at his mother's funeral but has in fact gone into the wrong room, that doesn't change the power of his actual words.

The monologue drags in parts, rambles in others, dwelling on details here and rushing over stories there. However, it all happens with a searing realism, and the whole thing makes for a deeply compelling twenty minutes of tv. One of the recurring themes of the monologue are Bea's last words to BoJack: "I see you."

He goes back and forth with the phrase, deciding if it is some mystical, meaningful last words from is mother, conferring either absolution upon him or asking for forgiveness of her own. At times though, he thinks it's instead just the weak, empty thoughts of a dying brain.

It's not until he's able to talk it out that he realises she wasn't saying "I see you," but instead "ICU", the unit of the hospital she was in. So it all meant nothing.
