4. But It's... Fake
Princess Carolyn got her happy ending with Judah in the end, but boy, did she have to work for it. One of many false dawns was her relationship with Ralph Stilton, which eventually fell apart after tension following the fifth miscarriage.
The episode, appropriately named Ruthie, features Princess Carolyn’s distant descendant Ruthie doing a show and tell on PC for her class. It details PC’s bravery in the face of adversity and lauds her as a great success. However, once the miscarriage is confirmed and Ralph departs, PC tells BoJack about her usual routine when she’s depressed.
It involves her imagining her distant descendant telling her class all about her. When BoJack says, “but it’s... fake,” she simply replies “yeah well. It makes me feel better.”
It’s sad for a number of reasons, not least because it’s tied to her real miscarriage. But it’s also the fact that it feels like PC’s last chance at this sort of life, and that all it’ll ever be is fake.
She later adopts a porcupine and names her Ruthie in tribute, dissipating the sadness a little.
