Before he was sailing the stars on board the Enterprise on Star Trek, Captain Kirk (AKA William Shatner) flew on a more down-to-earth flying machine in this episode of The Twilight Zone. Although he still encountered a very strange creature... While travelling by plane, Bob Wilson (Shatner) sees a monster - a gremlin - on the wing. But whenever anyone else looks it's not there. His fellow passengers - even his wife - believe Bob is suffering a mental breakdown but Bob is sure he has to stop the gremlin before it sabotages the plane. Yes, the gremlin itself (looking like a man in a cheap gorilla costume) could be perhaps laughable but it is the psychological horror side of the story that makes it so nerve-jangling. Thanks to William Shatner's increasingly-crazed performance we are carried on the man's journey (into the Twilight Zone) and scream at the screen when no one believes him. It's a classic horror story device - only one person can see the horror so everyone else thinks they're nuts - but that doesn't make it any less effective here. Couldn't it have been the cuddly Gizmo from the Gremlins movie on the side of that plane instead?
