10 Scariest X-Files Episodes Of All Time

2. Home - Season 4, Episode 2

Home X-Files
Fox

Home is probably the most controversial episode in the show's history. It was the first episode to feature a viewer discretion warning due to its graphic content and is also the only episode to be rated TV-MA. Whilst the episode was generally praised, some felt that it was a mist-step and that the show had went too far.

So what's all the fuss about? Why were people up in arms over an episode of The X-Files? First of all, the subject matter is deeply unsettling: Mulder and Scully are called in when the body of an infant with severe birth defects is found in a shallow grave. That alone was upsetting to some people. The episode centres around The Peacocks, a family of in-bred farmers who live in a house straight out of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

They are terrifying. The scene in which they break into the sheriff's home and brutally kill him and his wife is one of the most shocking in the show's history. Johnny Mathis, whose song 'Wonderful, Wonderful' was to be used during that scene, refused to allow the producers to use it because he was disgusted with the episode's content.

Many others felt that the show was 'tasteless' and that the Peacocks (whose makeup was really good) were too scary for network television. A seminal moment in the show's history, Home refuses to pull its punches.
