10 Shocking Twists That Would Improve Major TV Shows
9. Boardwalk Empire Change History
For a show that's about the illegal trafficking of alcohol, gangsters, sex, and violence, Boardwalk Empire receives a lot of criticism for being boring. Yet it's still a good show coming off perhaps its best season yet (SPOILERS), and killing off the show's crowd favorite already constituted one of the more shocking twists of the past year. But this show is also drawing to a close, as showrunner Terrence Winter (writer of the decisively not-boring Wolf of Wall Street) recently announced that the next season would be its last, and it could use another big twist to keep the show on its current high. My suggestion: take a cue from Tarantino and rewrite history. Alphonse Capone is playing a larger and larger role in the show, why not kill him off, or have him take over an even bigger territory? Or, the more recently added J. Edgar Hoover could start to personally track down Nucky so the show could have a straightforward lawman vs. gangster dynamic. I know some of you will rebuke this idea because the show is so accurate to period detail, particularly because the clothing, the dialogue, and the settings all seem to be from the 1920s. But let's not forget that Nucky Thompson is based off of Enoch L. Johnson, a man who was not directly involved in organized crime and who weighed over 250 pounds (unlike the diminutive Steve Buscemi). They already changed history, why not take it even further?
