Do you ever mess up so badly that you accidentally release the literal devil? If your name is either Sam or Dean Winchester, then the answer is yes.

The demon-slaying brothers made this oopsie at the end of the fourth season of Supernatural and spent the next batch of episodes try to get Lucifer back in his Cage.

They succeed, but only through Sam becoming the fallen angel's vessel. The younger sibling is eventually able to overcome Lucifer's control and send him back into his prison, sacrificing his own body and soul in the process.

Despite Sam being pulled down to the underworld, this episode actually wraps things up pretty nicely. The crooked Archangel Michael is also banished, which clears things up in Heaven, and Dean comes home to Lisa, a woman he has fallen for.

Lamentably, the show was far from over.

Sam manages to get out of Lucifer's Cage and his brother eventually re-joins him as a hunter. Supernatural lurched on for a total of 15 seasons, getting progressively worse as it went along.

Obviously leaving Sam in the Cage wasn't ideal, but this would have been a much better ending than the one fans got.
