10 Similarities You Never Noticed In Family Guy And The Simpsons

3. Homer And Peter Both Have A Gay Boss Who Hides His Sexuality

Waylon Smithers isn€™t technically Homer€™s employer but he€™s certainly his higher-up (apart from that one episode where Homer gets his job). Generally, Smithers gets to boss Homer around, and Homer has to follow those orders. Smithers is in love with Mr Burns, a joke at its funniest when his screensaver is revealed to be a naked Burns saying €œHello. Smithers. You€™re. Quite. Good. At. Turning. Me. On€. His obsession has led to some awkward moments and some even more awkward fan fiction. Though some claim he€™s just €œBurns-sexual€, Smithers has lately been written as an obviously gay character, but despite frequenting Springfield€™s gay bars (and The Ajax Steel Mill), he€™s not €œout€ like, say, Patty Bouvier. Peter€™s boss at the toy factory, Mr. Weed, was also clearly gay, and also in the closet. Though he never came out, Peter sees him being €œbench-pressed€ by softball player Guillermo, and he€™s filmed making breakfast in his underwear with another man. Again, gay men are at a premium in these cartoons, so it€™s a little surprising that both main characters report to one. Though not as surprising as the realization that the most prominent gay character in either show is a one year old child.
