The character of Chuck Shurley was introduced in Season 4, Episode 18 as the in-world author of the Supernatural book series. Castiel tells Sam and Dean that Chuck is a prophet, the stories he writes are of visions he's seen of the actual Sam and Dean.

Some viewers speculated what the show would eventually reveal: Chuck is in fact God. Whether a nice use of backshadowing or intended all along, re-watching the episode that introduces his character has some surprises, considering what we now know. The episode is called The Monster at the End of this Book. This works as a fitting hint at Chuck being the big bad of the final season of the series.

Also, in this episode Chuck sarcastically says of himself, "Well, there's only one explanation: obviously I'm a god. I'm definitely a god. A cruel, cruel, capricious god." It turns out that is very, very, true.
