Have you ever tried re-watching movies like the Sixth Sense and The Others and felt like an absolute buffoon for not seeing the obvious foreshadowing in play? If you’ve forgotten the feeling, just re-watch The Haunting of Hill House and it will come racing back.

A big series twist comes in the form of the “red room”, the mysterious locked room, and fixation of the Crain family’s. Near the end of the show, we discover that the red room isn’t a single room at all. To different members of the Crain family, the red room appeared as a different space. The smattering of different rooms was an illusion perpetrated by Hill House so as to entertain the Crains while it “[ate]” them. Grizzly stuff. The instances of foreshadowing on this revelation appear in myriad and become apparent whilst re-watching the series.

In episode one, Steve references Luke being in his treehouse, and Olivia thinks he’s joking. Similarly, in episodes five and eight, Mrs Dudley responds with confusion at the mention of a toy room and game room from Nell and Steve respectively. Finally, in episode nine, Olivia mentions her reading room to Luke, who doesn’t know what she is referring to.

What’s that? You want more? Then you’ll be happy to know that every time the red room appears as a different room, it maintains a single rectangular window in the centre wall. When it comes to this show, you sure do get bang for your buck.
