We’ve all heard of a play within a play, but what about a book within a tv-show based on a different book by the same author? Confused? Don’t be – all will be revealed when you go back and re-watch episode two of The Haunting of Hill House.

In episode two, during a flashback which features the younger versions of the Crain children playing outside, Theo can be seen reading a book. At first glance, there is nothing special about this book, but if you do a bit of research about the author, you’ll notice something cool. The book Theo is reading is The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, author of the original Haunting of Hill House novel.

Does this imply the existence of a The Haunting of Hill House novel within the world of the show? Did things have the possibility to get a bit too meta? Probably not. Is this Easter egg just a fun little nod to the original author of the The Haunting of Hill House book? Most likely.
