While he's probably quite widely considered a jock and a man of passion (or a hothead in more pertinent terms), Captain James T Kirk is one of Starfleet's most valued and celebrated captains for good reason.

Sure, he might be quick to physical action - whether in terms of battle or seduction - but as a strategist, he's almost unrivalled and there's something to be said about his success rate when he decides to use either of those approaches. He's also driven by instincts, which usually prove to be correct and his smarts are linked most closely to his slightly rougher edges.

Kirk is a chaotic figure whose opinions on authority are well-documented, but there are very few characters in the entire galaxy who can rival him in terms of his ability to choose the correct outcomes based only on his observational skills.
