A lot of how South Park has been shaped in because of the real lives of Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The main characters Stan Marsh and Kyle Broflovski are representations of the two and their friendship. For example, Kyle’s "Ginger Fro" hairstyle is based on the one Matt Stone had in the early years of producing South Park.

The Marsh family are inspired by Parker’s real-life family, right down to their names. His father was a liberal geologist, much like Randy and his sister used to relentlessly torment him as a child, exactly like Shelly. The Broflovski parents were also named after Stone’s parents.

Additionally, many recurring characters in the ensemble were all inspired by somebody who either Stone and Parker encountered in their lifetimes.

Liane Cartman’s promiscuity was based on a cheating ex-fiancé of Trey Parker, Kenny was modelled after a high-school student of Parker's who was poor and frequently absent (hence the joke of him dying all the time), Chef was inspired by a dining hall employee which the creators met at their University and even Mr Hankey stemmed from a childhood memory of Trey’s where he had a bad habit of not flushing the toilet.
