One of Star Trek's most unexpected returns came thanks to Discovery.

Oft-lauded as one of the finest installments of science-fiction TV, The City on the Edge of Forever is an undeniable classic of the franchise. Although only in the episode for a fraction of the story, the wheels of the tale are set in motion by the luminescent Guardian of Forever.

A forgotten portal on an ancient planet, the Guardian would actually return twice. Once just six years later in The Animated Series' Yesteryear and then 47 years later in Terra Firma. The reveal that Carl was the Guardian of Forever only comes at the very end of the two-part story and opens the path for Michelle Yeoh's Georgiou to kick off her Section 31 series which is.... where exactly?

What Discovery also provides is a bit of backstory for the Guardian. Seen as an important element during the Temporal Cold War it moved itself to Dannus V to keep out of harm's way. At some point as well the Guardian was capable of manifesting itself as a humanoid figure complete with a chair and newspaper.

For now, though, let's get the hell out of here...

A Star Trek fan from birth, I love to dive into every aspect of the franchise in front and behind the screen. There's something here that's kept me interested for the best part of four decades! Now I'm getting back into writing and using Star Trek as my first line of literary attack. If I'm not here on WhatCulture then you're more than welcome to come and take a look at my blog, Some Kind of Star Trek at http://SKoST.co.uk or maybe follow me on Twitter as @TheWarpCore. Sometimes I force myself not to talk about Star Trek.
