2. Ellen DeGeneres
As the nineties reached their mid-point Roseanne began to include a lot of gay themes within its continuity. Among them were Roseanne's gay boss Leo, and her bisexual friend Nancy long believed to have been straight. Roseanne even got in on the action herself when she went to a gay bar with Nancy and ended up being kissed by another woman. Is it any surprise then that outspoken activist Ellen DeGeneres appeared on the show in 1995? Well, probably not until you learn that Ellen herself didn't come out until two years later in 1997. In fact, during the time in which she made her guest appearance DeGeneres was known only for her self-titled sitcom and occasional stand-up comedy. But while Ellen is well-known for being out and open about her sexuality she is far from being typecast as such. If anything, Ellen is known for the fact that she's incredibly hilarious. Surely, this is why she was chosen for a guest spot as Jackie and Fred's marriage counselor in episode twenty-two of season seven. Despite being one of the biggest stars to appear on the show, Ellen's appearance is rather abrupt within the scope of the entire series. Still, it's definitely worth checking out to see Ellen in an earlier phase of her career.
