10 Surprising Early Roles Of Orange Is The New Black Stars
6. Constance Shulman - Doug
Constance Shulman, who plays Yoga Jones on Orange In The New Black, got into acting in 1989 with very minor roles in films like Fletch Lives and Fried Green Tomatoes. But her first major role in something most people would recognise her in was as the voice of Patti Mayonnaise.
That’s right, Constance Shulman did the voice of the lead character’s crush on the Nickelodeon series Doug. She had been doing Kraft commercials at the time, and creator Jim Jinkins heard her voice and decided it was exactly what he wanted for Patti. Constance thought this would be a small project of not much significance, but it ended up being one of the biggest Nick cartoons of the time - nobody who grew up in the 1990s wouldn’t recognise Constance’s voice.
Shulman took 15 years off to raise her kids after Doug went off the air, returning to TV in 2013 for Orange Is The New Black. She says she was extremely fortunate to find the role, telling The Wall Street Journal that "Middle-aged women, unless you’ve done some work to maintain yourself, it’s hard to find [good roles]...especially as a returning actor. I consider myself incredibly lucky."
