10 Terrible Episodes That Almost Ruined Great TV Shows

8. The Office: The Farm

The Office The Farm
NBC

The Office is a show with a pretty obvious decline, especially after Steve Carell left in the seventh season. But that decline had been happening for years, and Carell's exit was just the final nail in the coffin. The Farm, which comes towards the end of the ninth season, is the show's worst hour and a great example of everything that went wrong.

With a series that started by following a typical, boring office with really dry humour, the show got more and more cartoony over time. The series morphed into something else entirely, totally abandoning the more low key comedy of the first few seasons.

Dwight Schrute was always a character who was funny because he contrasted with the rest of the office. He was this ridiculous beet farmer whose personality didn't fit at all with an office full of mostly boring, typical people, and that's what was so funny about him.

But with The Farm, an episode intended to launch a spinoff which never happened, we place Dwight at the centre, surround him with similarly ridiculous people, and now there's no point.

While we used to be watching a ridiculous, cartoony man surrounded by normal people, now we're just watching a ridiculous, cartoony man surrounded by ridiculous, cartoony people.

Any chance the show had at regaining a sense of realism and dry humour had been totally lost.
