10 Terrifying Doctor Who Monsters That Had Us Hiding Behind The Sofa

9. The Werewolf - Tooth And Claw

Was, upon reflection, the CGI for this particular monster absolutely terrible? Yes? Did that mean it was any less terrifying to your author, at age 9? Nope.

Werewolves are, by their nature, scary creatures, both conceptually, with the transformation of a reasonable man into a ruthless beast at the sight of a full moon, but also as a physical presence, too. We’ve all had a nightmare about some form of wolf at some point, let’s be honest.

This particular monster is fairly atypical of NuWho, which tends to favour villains with a at least some degree of intelligence - the natural choice for a show whose protagonist often wins the day by outsmarting their foes rather than battling them. The Werewolf can’t be reasoned with, or convinced, it’s just a bloodthirsty beast that kills all in its way until it is ultimately defeated. This puts Ten in a scenario where he’s no longer the most useful person in the room, and is just another redshirt running for his life. This, in turn, also makes the audience less certain of the outcome.

For those nasty sound effects of the cast getting torn limb from limb alone, this would have a spot on our list…
