6. Raj Was Abused As A Child
The story of Raj's selective mutism in the earlier seasons had always been written off as a running gag. TBBT's writing department had the opportunity to explore a strand of social anxiety that we don't often get to see on television, but instead, they opted to make a joke out of it.
When you look further into it, though, there may be a far darker reason for Raj's mutism.
One fan theory suggests that Raj was actually abused from a young age, either by a family member, a friend, or a close contact. He occasionally boasted about having servants around his home at all times, so perhaps one of them could have abused the former selective mute.
However, what makes more sense is that it was actually Raj's mother or father who had abused him. It's rare for Raj to ever see eye to eye with either of his parents, often having a shouting contest with them whenever they video call him over the most tedious aspect of life.
Now, for Raj to still have sufficient contact with both of his parents, you have to take this theory into question. Remember, though, Mr. and Mrs. Koothrappali eventually divorced, with Raj's abuse from a young age perhaps being the reason for the papers being signed.
