Ridley Scott was working for the BBC during the 1960s as a set designer. His main responsibilities were to design props and sets for a variety of television programs. The shows producers assigned Scott to The Daleks, the episode that first introduced the iconic villains. However before he could get to work on the project he moved to Granada Television so that he could begin training as a director. Eventually Raymond Cusick took over the task and on a tiny budget brought Terry Nations vision to the screen. As a staff member at the BBC though, he didnt get to share in the merchandising rights of the Daleks. Instead he got a very modest bonus of £100 and a Blue Peter badge. Now we know that the look of the Daleks is part of what makes them so great, but it would still have been great to see Scotts take on them. He might have had something of a lucky escape though, as Scott would have received the same rewards for his work as Cusick. Maybe directing Alien, Gladiator and Blade Runner was a better use of his time after all even if we arent sure Oscar nominations beat having a Blue Peter badge.
