10 Things You Didn't Know About Doctor Who

7. Ridley Scott Was Set To Design the Daleks

Ridley Scott was working for the BBC during the 1960€™s as a set designer. His main responsibilities were to design props and sets for a variety of television programs. The show€™s producers assigned Scott to €œThe Daleks€, the episode that first introduced the iconic villains. However before he could get to work on the project he moved to Granada Television so that he could begin training as a director. Eventually Raymond Cusick took over the task and on a tiny budget brought Terry Nation€™s vision to the screen. As a staff member at the BBC though, he didn€™t get to share in the merchandising rights of the Daleks. Instead he got a very modest bonus of £100 and a Blue Peter badge. Now we know that the look of the Daleks is part of what makes them so great, but it would still have been great to see Scott€™s take on them. He might have had something of a lucky escape though, as Scott would have received the same rewards for his work as Cusick. Maybe directing Alien, Gladiator and Blade Runner was a better use of his time after all even if we aren€™t sure Oscar nominations beat having a Blue Peter badge.
