10 Things Doctor Who Wants You To Forget

8. Atlantis Is Destroyed (Again)

The lost city of Atlantis is a perfect setting for a Doctor Who story.

There are already plenty of real-life theories that the mythical civilisation was the work of aliens, so it's hardly a shock that it's appeared in the Whoniverse many times over the years.

Atlantis first appeared in the 1967 serial The Underwater Menace, where the Second Doctor and his companions travel there to stop a mad scientist from draining the Earth of its water. This serial ends with Atlantis being destroyed.

Then, in the Third Doctor's era, a powerful being named Azal claims that his people destroyed Atlantis, completely contradicting The Underwater Menace.

The Third Doctor would then journey to Atlantis in The Time Monster, in order to stop the Master's latest scheme. And as you've probably guessed by now, this serial also ends with the destruction of Atlantis.

In other words, Doctor Who has flattened Atlantis three different times under three different sets of circumstances, with each one making no reference to the other.

Maybe the show will explain this one day? Or, more likely, it'll just destroy Atlantis again and offer up yet another explanation.
