10 Things Doctor Who Wants You To Forget

5. That Random Unexplained Voice In The TARDIS

The two-part finale of Series 5 saw the Doctor's greatest enemies form a boyband to take him out once and for all.

The Daleks were on vocals, the Cybermen on guitar, and the Sontarans were the backing dancers. Sontar-HA!

There's also another baddie present in this story - the problem is that we have absolutely no idea who they are.

In The Pandorica Opens, the Doctor and Amy are stuck in Roman-era Britain while River Song attempts to pilot a malfunctioning TARDIS. As the ship spirals more and more out of control, the TARDIS scanner cracks, and a menacing voice can be heard saying "Silence will fall".

This voice then returns later on, while River is struggling with the TARDIS console.

Now, in hindsight, we know what this means - it's a reference to the Silence trying to stop the Doctor reaching Trenzalore - but who on Earth does this voice belong to, and how is it broadcasting inside the TARDIS?

The answer is, we never find out.

This feels like something that Steven Moffat was planning to explain later on, but he never got around to it, or he just forgot. Quite a lot of the "Silence will fall" story arc feels made up on the fly, so there were always going to be loose ends.

Let's just say a Dalek did it and move on.
