10 Things Futurama Wants You To Forget

9. Career Chips

Futurama Amy Bender

When Fry was frozen for a thousand years, he managed to take at least some positives from it, seeing an opportunity for a completely fresh start. The rules of the future however, prevent him from this, as he is permanently labelled as a delivery boy. The entire first episode, and the reason he and Leela become close in the first place, revolves around her trying to implant his career chip.

There is no quitting, and no way around it, otherwise he will be fired out of a cannon into the sun. Luckily, Professor Farnsworth had the spare career chips from his previous crew, allowing Fry, Leela, and Bender to join Planet Express, and they were barely ever mentioned again.

In 'The Cryonic Woman', Fry takes a job at the cryogenic lab after being given Leela's chip by mistake, and in 'Into the Wild Green Yonder', the Professor removes Hermes and Zoidberg's chips.

So they are referenced throughout the series, albeit sparingly, but what about when Fry quits and becomes a police officer in 'Law and Oracle'? Or when Leela becomes a real estate agent in 'Overclockwise'? Or when Scruffy worked as a roadie for the Beastie Boys in 'Hell is Other Robots'? How were they allowed out of their current jobs when their career chips are supposed to be permanent?
