10 Things That Date Friends Terribly

8. Ross Geller's Love Affair With Hair Gel

If there's one standout icon of misguided masculine grooming in the '90s, it's hair gel. David Beckham cementing his footballing legacy as quickly as he was cementing his hair got him a huge sponsorship deal with Brylcreem, but across the Atlantic it was a TV palaeontologist who had become the poster boy for impossible hold.

Ross had a few dodgy hairstyles across the show's lengthy run (special mention to his bubble perm white-guy afro in the all the flashback episodes), but his evolving love affair with hair gel remains the worst. Season 1, he'd added a quick dab to provide a wet look to an otherwise unstyled haircut. In Season 2 he moved into a gelled side-parting to better fit his growing status as man of science, before twisting this into a front flick to show that, hey, he was still a fun guy as well.

Season 4 saw Ross using the better part of the bottle to achieve maximum lift and volume, an almost boyband-esque barnet to better compliment his slim sideburns. Season 5 though was his coup d'état, with gallons of industrial strength 'max-hold' gel on display in his almost impressively crispy waves.
