7. 'Their' Doctor May Surprise You
For classic Whovians their Doctor is usually the one they first remember watching. This may be because there was little opportunity to get to know earlier incarnations. Repeats were virtually non-existent and VHS recorders rare until the mid 80s. Once an episode was transmitted it was almost gone forever. Nowadays there are multiple channels showing reruns, and DVRs that can store hours of episodes. Not to mention DVDs, Blu-rays and theyre not known as the YouTube generation for nothing. Whovian children now have 90% of the shows back catalogue available on demand. This means that they have greater exposure to past Doctors and can look back without rose-tinted spectacles. They may start off watching David Tennant but claim Christopher Eccleston as their favourite. They may even prefer a newer model. Maybe the one they watched when they were little was too silly. Nu-Who now has four Doctors that youngsters can rally to, five if you include the War Doctor. This allows them to form their own cliques, fashions and cults at school. Maybe the in crowd likes 10, the cool loners identify with 9. Class comedians channel 11 and the mature tweenagers might go for 12. Just stay away from the disciples of the War Doctor. Bad boys and girls need a hero, too.
