10 Things The Walking Dead Wishes It Could’ve Done Differently

2. Carl's Death

Oh boy did they do Carl dirty. The story of The Walking Dead, while seen through Rick's eyes, is supposed to be the story of Carl. Comic creator Robert Kirkman always made it clear that Rick would die one day, and that it's the story of a character who grows up and matures in a post-apocalyptic world, and how he inherits lessons of the past and meshes those with the reality of the present to build a future that's the most important element of the series.

Well, the TV show writers took at that idea, blew their noses with it and decided that Carl was just as expendable as anyone else. In Season 7, after being through hell and having his eye shot out of his head, Carl dies while trying to save a stranger, being secretly bitten by a walker and dying next to his father.

While this made for a shock twist, it was a major blow to the overall story for a couple of reasons. First, it only furthered yet another plot about Rick finding his humanity, but it also kind of ruined the future of the show. Carl was the future, and Rick had now lost all of his family, and no longer had anything to fight for.
