The X-Files Revival: 10 Things We Learned From 'Founder's Mutation'
10. Founder's Mutation Features One Of The Creepiest Teasers The X-Files Has Ever Had
Founder's Mutation starts off with a teaser (or cold open, if you prefer) featuring a medical researcher, Dr. Sanjay (Christopher Logan), experiencing auditory noise, eventually progressing to hearing voices - voices and noise that quickly drive him insane. Not before, however, he accesses classified medical records at the top secret research facility he works for, a private facility working for the Department of Defense. Of course, the voices in his head directed him to breach security. That alone would make for an interesting opening scene, but what happens next is just plain creepy: to get rid of the voices, Dr. Sanjay pierces his own ear with a letter opener - then embeds it all the way into his skull, killing himself in the process. The shot of this is not for the squeamish (nor is a later scene where Scully removes the letter opener). It's the first scene of the revival to hit this level of scary and grotesque - so well done to the cast, writer/director James Wong, and crew.
