10 Things We Learned From The X-Files Revival Premiere My Struggle
2. The Groundwork Has Been Laid
Interestingly enough, critics who were given advance screenings of this new batch of X-Files episodes have indicated that the best it yet to come. Most have pointed to the second and third episodes of the season as far superior to My Struggle, and several have stated that the third, Mulder and Scully Meet the Were-Monster, is an instant classic. That said, My Struggle had a job to do, and not an easy one at that: bring fans up to speed on the world of The X-Files and its characters, while introducing potential new fans (who have hopefully been marathoning the show on Netflix, or who bought the recent Blu Ray releases) to the series. So you can forgive the expository dialog this time out. The show did succeed in setting the table for bigger and better things. Duchovny and Anderson performed admirably, and A.D. Skinner being back, with a beard, was perfect - Skinner is always welcome (fanboy moment: Mitch Pileggi's in the opening credits, as he was towards the end of the show. Awesome!). The groundwork is there, The X-Files have been re-opened, and fans will have high hopes for the next couple of episodes. The problem is, with only six outings (and five remaining), the show doesn't have long to find its stride.
