10 Things We Learned From The X-Files Revival Premiere My Struggle

1. Six Episodes Will Not Be Enough For The Mythology

Which brings us to the next thing we've learned, and it's something of an issue: six episodes will not be enough. For starters, rather than tighten things up and address the mythology head on, the show has added another wrinkle to it, by suggesting that the very government Mulder and Scully worked for are using alien technology to assist in world domination plans. It should be noted that the whole "aliens are a hoax" thing has been done by the show before, notably in season five's opener, Redux/Redux II, episodes which fans have been comparing My Struggle to quite a bit. However, while that storyline had Mulder being tricked into believing aliens were a hoax, My Struggle suggests that they are real, that the governments of the world have used - and hidden - their technology, but that the rest of what he has believed over the years is a lie to cover up more insidious plans from our own government. Mulder even has an informant leading him in that direction. The problem is, most of this is probably a smoke screen. It would be downright insulting if the show actually went this direction after showing fans so much in the later seasons, where even the skeptical Dana Scully became a believer. However, with four monster of the week episodes coming up next, and just one more mythology outing, The X-Files has precious little time to tie things up. Of course, Chris Carter has already spoken of another season, or a third movie - but first, the show will have to prove it can continue to entertain us. My Struggle was a solid start, but not a home run. The next few episodes will really seal the deal, one way or the other.
