10 Things We Learned From Twin Peaks: The Return Part 3
4. The Vintage Tone Is Swelling In Volume
The Return has divided the hardcore Peaks fandom. Co-creator Mark Frost went to great lengths in warning viewers that this wouldn't be a Twin Peaks Christmas. What fans were not warned of is how little takes place in the titular town itself.
The compelling mysteries teased in New York and South Dakota have alienated pockets of the fandom, but in Part 3, the still-brief excursions into the Pacific Northwest return us both to the town itself and closer to the spirit of the original series. In a hilarious scene, Deputy Hawk and Andy and Lucy Brennan talk themselves into a metaphysical crisis when trying to determine what the Log Lady is convinced is missing from the 1989 Laura Palmer case files. "We are here," Andy manages, finally.
An accusation can be levelled at the broad presentation of Andy and Lucy; bluntly, they were always dumb, but never this dumb. Comedy is subjective, mileage may vary, etc. - but the clear warmth Lynch has for the characters elevates the more hur-hur material into something comforting, if not outright hilarious.
What is missing? The pages from Laura Palmer's diary? The ring? Is it about the bunny?
