10 Things You Didn't Know About Firefly
2. Pretty Cunning
Jayne Cobb might lack a lot of the intelligence of some of the other crew members of the Serenity but what he lacks in smarts he more than makes up for it in the cunning department. The reason, a cunning hat.
So iconic was that item of paraphernalia that its hard to imagine Jayne without it, even if it only made some sporadic appearances at best.
Knitted by one of the crew as a home project, Adam Baldwin instantly fell in love with the item and headed straight towards the office of executive producer Tim Minear and demanded its inclusion. Although not really understanding why Jayne would be so enamored with a bright orange hat, taking into account his character in other episodes, He agreed. Also in Baldwins favour was that Joss Whedon was not on set that day.
The rest is history, a backstory was written and after screenings, thousands of Browncoats began creating their own versions to wear at home and conventions. So overwhelming was the response that an official version was commissioned. Unfortunately for independent creators this development led to them receiving a cease and desist letter on selling any of their own takes on the cunning hat. One can only assume this was Alliance propoganda at work.
