10 Things You Didn't Know About Only Fools & Horses
9. 'Readies'
The
title of Only Fools & Horses is one that everyone will be familiar with
even if they have never watched the show; it has become engrained in British
pop culture thanks to the hugely successful run of the much-loved sitcom.
However, many people may be unaware what the title is in reference to.
The title comes from a phrase that refers to work-evaders and tax-avoiders that claim that “only fools and horses work for a living”. Fans of the show will recognise how this perfectly sums up the Trotters, in particular Del, who was always looking for shortcuts to make money.
But this wasn’t always set in stone and John Sullivan toyed around with other names for the sitcom, such as ‘Readies’ and ‘Big Brother’. ‘Readies’ is a slang term for a £50 note and was reportedly pencilled in as the show’s title for quite some time. ‘Big Brother’ was also in the mix and was used as the title of the very first episode of the sitcom.
