10 Things You Didn't Know About The Making Of The Simpsons

9. The Idea For The Simpsons' Yellow Skin Came From A Painter Named Georgie Peluse

You might not have heard of Georgie Peluse (who is a woman, by the way), but you're sure as heck familiar with her work - pretty much everyone on the planet is. Peluse worked as an artist on the original one-minute Simpsons shorts that aired as part of The Tracey Ullman Show, you see, and was the person tasked with painting all the cels. And it was ol' Georgie who had the genius idea to make The Simpsons' skin yellow. Nowadays, audiences take the whole yellow skin thing for granted because everyone is so used to it, of course, but back then it must have been deemed quite a crazy move. David Silverman, who animated the shorts, had this to say about Peluse: "She was amazing! She was a one woman show, painting all the cells. I don't know how she did it." Thank Springfield that she did, though! Can you imagine if the Simpsons had ended up with regular skin? So much of the show's iconography is owed to Peluse's moment of inspiration, and - as Matt Groening puts it - "because when you're flicking through channels with your remote control, and a flash of yellow goes by, you'll know you're watching The Simpsons."
