10 Things You Learn Rewatching Stargate SG-1

9. Use Your Supporting Characters

While the central characters of a show are the foundations upon which it is built, the supporting cast are equally important. Those who don't receive top billing, don't get a flashy title sequence or the big bucks are the ones who help glue a show together over time. They help flesh out the world beyond the central characters viewpoints.

For SG-1, every time that Bra'tac shows up, or every episode that features the loveable Dr. Janet Frasier, or Sam's father turned Tok'ra Jacob, there's a little something extra to the story. These characters both fill basic functions (Dr. Frasier deals with all the medical stuff, for example), but they also act as foils for specific characters.

Bra'tac is the path that Teal'c walks, he too was First Prime to Apophis and sought to undermine him. His character gives Teal'c something to strive for, even if he is doing it in his own way. Jacob serves to remind Sam and the others about the value of relying on family as well as respecting your elders. Janet is easily the heart of the SGC.

Characters like this make a show more than just the sum of its parts.

Still bitter that Star Trek Enterprise got canned and almost old enough to angrily tell the kids to 'Get Off My Lawn!'
